How to check your MacBook battery
Battery Health is in System Settings > Battery and reads Normal or Service Recommended. For the cycle count, hold Option, click the Apple menu, choose System Information and select Power.
Apple designs a MacBook battery to keep up to 80% of its original capacity at its maximum cycle count — 1,000 cycles for every MacBook Pro from 2009 and every MacBook Air from late 2010. The battery keeps working after that, with shorter runtime.
“Charging On Hold” is not a fault: Optimised Battery Charging holds the charge at 80% until macOS expects you to need the rest.
How the battery is fitted differs by model
The battery is a separate part on every MacBook, but how it comes out changes from model to model — which is why the job is planned for your exact Mac:
- MacBook Air M1
- The cells sit on a tray held by stretch-release strips; both speakers come out to reach it.
- MacBook Air M2
- The logic board comes out first; the tray is held by screws and stretch-release strips.
- 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1
- The cells are glued in and released with adhesive remover; the trackpad comes out first.
- 16-inch MacBook Pro (2019)
- The logic board assembly comes out, and the cells are glued to a strip-held tray.
- Retina MacBook Pro 13-inch (2013–2015)
- The battery is glued in, and both speakers come out first.
Swollen battery: stop charging
A swollen battery pushes up the trackpad or lifts the bottom case. Stop charging the MacBook, keep it on a hard surface and book a replacement. A swollen battery is removed without piercing or bending it.
How the repair is done
- 1Battery Health and the cycle count are read in macOS
- 2The adapter and charging port are tested, so a charging fault is not mistaken for a worn battery
- 3The battery is disconnected before anything else inside is touched
- 4The old battery is released the way your model needs — strips, a screwed tray or adhesive
- 5The new battery is fitted, then charging, Battery Health and the cycle count are checked in macOS
MacBook Battery Replacement — FAQs
Apple lists 1,000 cycles for every MacBook Pro from 2009 and every MacBook Air from late 2010. At that count the battery is designed to keep up to 80% of its capacity when new, and it keeps working beyond it with shorter runtime.
Apple says it means the battery holds less charge than it did when new, or is not working normally. You can keep using the MacBook safely; it is a sign that a replacement will bring back runtime.
Yes. On every Apple silicon MacBook the battery is a separate part. On the M1 Air it sits on a tray held by stretch-release strips; on the M2 Air the logic board comes out first.
Often, but a faulty adapter, cable or charging port can look the same. Those are tested first, so you replace the battery only if it is the cause.
No. The battery is a different part from the storage, and the repair does not reinstall macOS or erase the disk. Backing up first is still the right habit before any repair.
