Which screen does your MacBook have?
MacBook screens differ more between generations than most people expect, and each model takes its own display. The list below shows which one your Mac has; the model list further down gives the exact panel for every model.
- Liquid Retina XDR (mini-LED)
- 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro from 2021 — M1 Pro and every later chip. ProMotion up to 120Hz and a camera notch at the top of the screen.
- Liquid Retina
- MacBook Air 13.6-inch and 15.3-inch from the M2 (2022) onwards, also with a camera notch.
- Retina, 13.3-inch
- MacBook Air M1 (2020), the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1, and the Intel Retina Air and Pro models from 2016 to 2020. True Tone on the Pro from 2018 and the Air from 2019.
- Non-Retina LED-backlit
- MacBook Air 11-inch and 13-inch up to 2017, and the older 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro without Retina.
Why a MacBook screen is replaced as a whole
On a MacBook the glass, the panel and its backlight are built into one display assembly, so a crack, a line or a dark patch is fixed by fitting a new assembly for your exact model rather than a new sheet of glass. The FaceTime camera sits in the same lid, so it is checked again after fitting.
Many MacBook screens crack without a fall. The panel sits millimetres above the keys, so closing the lid on earbuds, a pen or a crumb, or squeezing the Mac into a full bag, is enough.
The 2016–2017 MacBook Pro display cable (“Flexgate”)
On the 2016 and 2017 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro, the thin display cable wears from opening and closing the lid. It first shows as uneven light along the bottom of the screen and can end in a dead display; in affected units the whole display is replaced. Apple made the cable longer from the 2018 models.
How the repair is done
- 1Tell us your model (Apple menu > About This Mac) and what the screen shows
- 2Diagnosis first — an external-monitor test separates a display fault from a logic board fault
- 3You hear what the repair involves for your exact model before any work starts
- 4The battery is disconnected before the display assembly comes off
- 5After fitting: brightness, colour, True Tone where your model has it, the camera and sleep when the lid closes are checked
MacBook Screen Replacement — FAQs
Choose About This Mac from the Apple menu — it shows the model name and year, for example “MacBook Air (M2, 2022)”. If the Mac will not start, the A-number (such as A2337) is printed on the underside of the case.
On almost every MacBook, no. The glass and the panel are one display assembly, so a crack, lines or a dark patch are all fixed by fitting a new assembly made for your model.
A screen replacement does not touch the storage, so your files stay as they are. Back up with Time Machine first anyway — Apple asks for the same before any Mac service.
Often yes, with an external monitor while you wait. A crack tends to spread each time the lid opens, and pressure on a cracked panel can make the dark patch grow, so book the repair soon.
Press Caps Lock and connect an external monitor. If the light comes on or the monitor shows a picture, the screen or its cable is the likely cause. If not, the diagnosis checks the battery, power and logic board.
