Which screen does your MacBook have?

MacBook screens differ more between generations than most people expect, and each model takes its own display. The list below shows which one your Mac has; the model list further down gives the exact panel for every model.

Why a MacBook screen is replaced as a whole

On a MacBook the glass, the panel and its backlight are built into one display assembly, so a crack, a line or a dark patch is fixed by fitting a new assembly for your exact model rather than a new sheet of glass. The FaceTime camera sits in the same lid, so it is checked again after fitting.

Many MacBook screens crack without a fall. The panel sits millimetres above the keys, so closing the lid on earbuds, a pen or a crumb, or squeezing the Mac into a full bag, is enough.

The 2016–2017 MacBook Pro display cable (“Flexgate”)

On the 2016 and 2017 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro, the thin display cable wears from opening and closing the lid. It first shows as uneven light along the bottom of the screen and can end in a dead display; in affected units the whole display is replaced. Apple made the cable longer from the 2018 models.

Choose About This Mac from the Apple menu — it shows the model name and year, for example “MacBook Air (M2, 2022)”. If the Mac will not start, the A-number (such as A2337) is printed on the underside of the case.

A screen replacement does not touch the storage, so your files stay as they are. Back up with Time Machine first anyway — Apple asks for the same before any Mac service.
