First steps after a spill

  • Switch the MacBook off — hold the power button if it does not respond
  • Unplug the charger and every accessory
  • Keep it open and upside down so liquid drains out of the keyboard
  • Do not switch it on to check, and do not charge it
  • Do not dry it with a hair dryer or heater
  • Book a check soon: sugary or salty drinks leave residue that keeps corroding the board after it dries, so a Mac that seems fine the next day still needs opening

If your MacBook will not turn on

  • Connect a known-good adapter and cable, and leave it to charge for a while
  • Hold the power button (Touch ID on newer MacBooks) for about 10 seconds, release it, then press it once
  • Apple silicon (M1 and later) has no SMC key combination — Apple says it resets itself; Intel MacBooks have a reset sequence on Apple's “Reset the SMC” page
  • Check for life: if Caps Lock lights up or an external monitor shows a picture, the Mac is on and the screen is the fault
  • A gear, a question mark or a circle with a line means the Mac is on but not starting up — a software or storage problem handled through macOS Recovery, not a dead logic board

What happens on the logic board

The battery is disconnected first. The MacBook is opened, the logic board (motherboard) is inspected for liquid marks and corrosion and cleaned, then power, charging, the keyboard, trackpad and speakers are tested. You hear what was found and what the fix involves — cleaning, a repair on the board, or a replacement part — before any further work goes ahead.

On Apple silicon and T2 MacBooks, a firmware revive from another Mac is tried before any board work. Apple says a revive does not erase the Mac.

Your files after liquid damage

On MacBooks with Apple silicon or the T2 chip (2018 onwards), the files are encrypted to that Mac's own logic board, so the board's condition decides whether they can be read. If you have no backup, say so when you book: the board is handled to keep it readable, and nothing is erased without asking you first.

MacBook Water Damage Repair — FAQs

Often, yes. The outcome depends on the liquid, how long the Mac stayed on while wet and how far it spread. Opening the case and inspecting the board comes first, then you hear what is realistic.

Not necessarily. Connect a working adapter, leave it to charge for a while, then hold the power or Touch ID button for about 10 seconds, release and press once. If nothing happens, the battery, charging port and logic board are tested in that order.

Not always. A failed update can stop a Mac at the Apple logo, and macOS Recovery can repair the disk or reinstall macOS over the top without erasing your files. If Recovery will not start either, the board is checked.

Logic board faults after a spill or a power failure are handled under these two repairs: the board is inspected, cleaned and tested, and what it needs is explained to you before any board-level work is agreed.

Most repairs never touch the storage. Back up with Time Machine first anyway — Apple asks for the same before any Mac service. Apple's checklist also asks you to turn off Find My Mac and know your login password; we tell you when you book whether your repair needs either, and nothing is erased without asking you first.
